Tips to help you compete in MKWii. Basic Pro Elite Pro Misc User Submitted
==Basic Tactics=
Drifting/Mini-turbo-This one is a simple tactic that everyone needs to know if they use manual. You need to know how the kart/bike you use drifts. You will have to adjust your timing.Mini-turbos come with manual and can be useful for extra speed and quick getaways. Karts have red mini-turbos which give extra speed
Wheelies-Simple, lift up your controller, or press the d-pad. Try to avoid doing this too soon at the start or in a huge group, chances are,you will get bumped and lose your speed boost. You can chain them together for a great boost in speed. *Bonus Fact*-On DS Desert Hills, if you use a heavy character, wheelie on the hill before the Pokeys, you just might get a double trick from it.
Tricks- These are essential in courses with jumps. Knowing which trick to do can save you, down tricks are useful for getting down to the ground fast, up tricks are great for just avoiding that POW, and side tricks are mainly used for slight mid-air turning. If you get lucky, that trick might jam. A jammed trick is faster than a normal trick. *Bonus*-Hop before tricks you get lower jumps. *Bonus 2*-You can drop to the ground faster by pressing the control stick down.
Slipstream- This is when you get behind a kart or bike, and get extra speed from just being behind them. You can get ahead at the start of a race, or after a POW. Plus, you bump the other person to the side. Don't do it when you know that person has an item, they might just drop it behind you. *2 player Slipstream*-Do you have a guest who isn't too bad, or you're in a clan with some of your friends, then this can be pretty useful. This involves teamwork, get your friend/ member to get in front of you, slipstream off of them, then they slipstream off of you. The cycle will continue. Don't bump into each other either. You can get a good lead on straightaways.
Trapping-Knowing where and when to use your traps can mean the difference between getting blue shelled and winning, and getting blue shell and coming in last. Don't just lay your items where ever, especially Fake Item Boxes. Place them in turns, after a cannon, and jumps like the one on Rainbow Road. Extend your lead, don't hold a banana for an entire race. *Bonus*-Triple bananas on the Dk Jungle Parkway Bridge
Protection- Hold the item button when you have a banana,or a shell to provide defense against red shells, maybe even blue shells. Lay some traps but make sure not to waste them once you get them. Triple shells and bananas provide good protection. Red shells make people reluctant to pass you and you can hold a lead for a long time...until a blue shell.
Hopping-This is only with manual. Use it to avoid a POW if you are luck, shorten a jump or maybe avoid a shell. Not much about it.
Target Shocking-A rather noobish tactic but very effective on courses like Mushroom Gorge. If used at the right time, you could get a win. It helps protect your friends if you care about that.
POW Avoidance-Just press the trick button on the last POW or hop like crazy. Turns are dangerous though. *Bonus*If you are going to get POW'd around a turn, stop, you just might save yourself from falling. *Bonus 2*-Don't get POw'd on a zipper pad, or hit someone with triple shells, most likely, you will fly far across the track, into a wall, or chasm.
Bumping- Bumping people out of their wheelies causes them to lose their speed. Just bumping people moves them out of the way if they are lighter than you. Rainbow Road is infamous for this.

These tactics take some skill to perform.
Rocket Start- When you perform a rocket start, you get a huge boost at the start of a race. Press it when the 2 is disappearing. Certain times can give you a longer one.I also noticed that Starting at the 3, stopping at 2, then starting up at 1, can also give a boost.
Sniping-This is when you use a banana, shell, or FIB to hit someone. You have to aim alot to get snipe someone. Turns can be a good place to get someone if you are skilled enough. It is easy to snipe someone from close distance, but sniping someone from far away takes alot of skill. You have to think of where they will be and fire there.
Blue Shell Dodging- This is in the pro because it takes alot of skill to do there are tons of methods to dodge a blue shell. *Mushrooom*-As the blue shell is coming down, use the mushroom that you hopefully have, use it and you avoided a blue shell...if you used it when I said. *Banana,Fake Item Box*- You need a jump to do this, drop the banana behind you, the blue shell will hit the banana/fake item box and explode. *Bullet Bill,Star,Mega Mushroom* -Just use it at the right time. *Barrel Cannon*- Just enter the barrel cannon, the shell will try to hit you and will fail. *Itemless*-This involves a trick, if you hit the ground just right, you could possibly avoid it. Even in the air, you could dodge it. A good place to try this is on Maple Treeway, could hit the trees. *Shells*-Kind of works like the banana method. I've seen it done on Koopa Cape.
You can also dodge them with items on the ground.
Stand Still Mini-Turbo-Press the acceleration and drift button to do a stand still mini-turbo. Move from side to side to speed it up.It can be dangerous when people have items though.
Stealing Items- For this tactic, it involves, going through multiple item boxes or just going through someone else's item box. It drains your opponents of items and can give you a lead. Also, if you hit enough item boxes, you might get nothing but mushrooms. This can be useful, or hurtful.
Steering Bullet Bills- Tilt the control stick when using your Bullet Bill so that you can hit people.
Walling Shells-The tactic itself is as simple as turning tightly around a corner. You can wall the shell off of just about every course. There are several ways to do this.
*Wall-All you have to do is turn sharply around a turn when a red shell is nearby.Luigi Circuit is hard, but possible.*
*Jump-Go over a jump and hopefully the red shell will be gone.*
*Track Obstacles- Get past a tree,Chomp, car or anything that will destroy the shell.*
*Other Items- Occasionally, items will be laying around, get past these so the item will block the red shell.*
*Other People- The funnest way to wall red shells. Get in front of other people and hope they get hit by it, then start laughing. It is hard to do all the time though because people may move out of the way and you will get hit anyway.*

This section is for tactics that take good skills to do perfectly.
Extreme Sniping-Like regular sniping with shells...etc, but this is when they have triple shells or bananas. This means firing a green shell and having it land on someone, or bouncing them off the right wall to get someone. Also, hitting people behind you with a shell you fired forward would be included with these.
Mushrooms in 1st-It is here because it takes alot of luck and skill to do. You have to go through 14+ Item boxes and use them. It can take more or less though. When a blue shell comes, you will be ready. Just getting mushrooms can be destructive in last place though. It is easiest on Bowser's Castles.
Jumping Over Items- This takes an amazing amount of luck to do, hop like crazy and hope you don't get hit by that shell or banana.
Mushroomless Shortcuts- A great example of this is Delfino Square. To do these, it usually takes a wheelie, mini-turbo, or just a vehicle with high acceleration.
*Rainbow Road:An easy one to do, just takes timing. After the bouncy pads, if you tricked on the last zipper, you should have enough speed to carry you to the figure 8, take the jump like you would with a shoom. The second shortcut you can do by going on the zipper pad, then coming down and hopping as you go off the track.*
*Delfino Square-When you are going around the town section of this track, drift until you get a minturbo, when you get to the small jump where the grass is, release it. The turbo should carry you over the jump and onto the dock. You can also wheelie or hop. It can be done on automatic with a kart. I tried it on the Sprinter, not on any other karts though.
Zipper Pad Spamming-I just named it that, no idea what it would be called. It involves hitting the zipper pad(purple) just right so that you get a boost from it without going in the air. It gives you a big speed boost.
-USER SUBMITTED TIPS-(For all the stuff I forgot)
I didn't see anything involving the "shroomba" Mainly used on the Goomba walking in front of the grass patch on Koopa Cape. Basically involves driving right at the goomba, shooting it with a green shell right before hitting it, and using the mushroom that pops out to cut across the grass. You can also shoot the boxes for mushrooms, and the boxes in front of the alley shortcut on Delfino Square are the best. If you can get a mushroom to pop out, it will usually land in the shortcut area, allowing you to take the alley shortcut. This can be kinda tricky, but it's doable.
Also, I enjoy doing what I call "path clearing" I mainly use this at the big jump in Wario's Gold Mine, or at the opening jump in Bowser Castle. Many people like to trap and lay bananas all over the place. It's hard to see if a banana is hiding on either of those jumps. I drive strait, and I'll shoot a shell forward, that way, any bananas that might be hiding or located off the jump will get taken out and clear a path for my vehicle.
I'm also a big fan of "bomb car targetting" on Moonview. If I don't have a green, I will drive strait at a bomb car, (playing chicken of sorts), and at the last second, swerve out of the way. If I'm lagging on anyone elses screen, I will run right into this bomb car and screw other people over, when in reality, I swerved out of the way unharmed. If I have a green, I will drive right pass a bomb car, and shoot my shell backwards to blow up the bomb and anyone who might be close behind me.
And lastly, I didn't see anything on "hop throwing". You will throw an item farther ahead of you if you hop and throw vs just throwing forward. This allows you to snipe people with bombs and other items from farther distances. -Submitted by shtueg
On tracks that have large speed-ramp jumps on them (DK Mountain, DK summit, Koopa Cape, others...), it is almost always faster to go around the jump rather than go over it. The time you gain by mini-turbo'ing around the jump and wheelie'ing the rest more than makes up for the accel pad and trick you bypassed. Submitted by Flick.

-------------Misc TACTICS------ For tactics that are useful, but don't fit into a catagory.
Rocket Restart-When you fall off the track, when he is going to place you down, wait til he drops you, the moment you hit the ground, press the button that you use to go, if done right, you should get a boost.
---------------------
*Bonus*Both can be done with karts and automatic. *Never do this online.*
Grumble Glitcher Blocking- When you see someone Grumble glitching, try to keep them from doing it. It is easy to do, unless you use the Quacker. Follow them and block where they are trying to jump from. Bump them while they are wheelieing, or STMTing. Keep blocking them until they leave or until they lose a ton of VR. If they do get up there on the rock, then bump them off, block the narrower parts of the rock. *If you can't, then just torture them in another race*
Hacker detection- A good way in spotting subtle hackers, is to hold an item that there can only be one of, like a blue shell, lightning, star, mega mushroom or bullet bill. If someone hits you with one of these items, and you have it in your inventory, they are hacking. A good example is if you hold a blue shell, then you get blue shelled, somethings not right.
Quick Funky Stadium Escape- On the middle section, where the tunnel thing is, if you have a kart, drift on the boost pads where the tunnel is. Make sure you are really close to falling, once you get to where the top of the tunnel is, make sure part of your kart hits the inside, you should either go flying sideways, or backwards. When getting away from mega mushrooms, stars, and shells, I found this useful.
Phantom Stuck in Fence- Get to the lower pathway, get to the boost pad part but don't fly off the jump, instead, make sure you drive into the left side of the fence and keep moving up,once you are on the edge, move more ,when you think you'll fly off move back quickly. If you did it right, part of the Phantom should be stuck in the fence.
